Baby Shower Brunch…and a Goat

Oh, baby!  Sweet baby shower invitations trimmed with vintage floral inspired stamps set the tone for the cozy brunch welcoming Baby Crowley.  Brunch was held at Little Goat Diner in Chicago, with delicious fare from celebrity chef Stephanie Izard (who even made an appearance!).   Guests were treated to Prosecco & Pamma (a festive way to make a pink Champagne cocktail) and nibbled on treats on the rooftop before sitting down to a family style brunch.  Place card favors held homemade cupcakes in kraft boxes (courtesy of one of the hosts).  The tables were simply decorated with floral arrangements in hobnail vases, provided by A New Leaf.  Invitations & paper goods by Olive & Violet.

Going Gray

Gray is probably my favorite neutral to incorporate into wedding invitations these days.  To me, it maintains a level of formality and sophistication, but is softer and more mailable than it’s cousin black.  With so many shades ranging from a subtle basic gray, to a deep charcoal, to the purplish, bluish, brownish variations, there seems to be a gray for everyone and every style.

We’ve also discovered some amazing new gray papers that are available in a range of weights (including the thick stuff!).  These are perfect for incorporating a traditional style with a modern edge.  Here are a few recent projects we’ve been working on that explore the many shades of gray that are available.

Vintage India Wedding Celebration

For their wedding, Rikita and Sujay opted for an over the top soiree celebrating their Indian heritage.  Inspired by the Wes Anderson film The Darjeerling Limited as well as vintage India travel posters – the couple set out to create a memorable backdrop for their nuptials taking place at the Bridgeport Art Center.

Coral and Gold Fall Baby’s 1st Birthday

Kate wanted a classic fall themed party for her daughter Lucy’s 1st birthday.  Pulling gold and coral accents, Kate achieved just that – a fun, whimsical decor style while ensuring the theme was still age appropriate.  Tissue garland swagged across the dining room where a sweets table with printed paper bags held candy corn and popcorn.  Kate made her own candied apples, wrapped in cello bags, and tied with coordinating ribbon.  A small label that matched the invitations thanked guests for coming.  Invitations and decor provided by Olive & Violet.

Lake Michigan Beach Retreat

My brother Dylan – aka “King Dylan”, aka “Dyl Pickle” – celebrated his 30th birthday surrounded by family on the shores of Lake Michigan in beautiful New Buffalo.  We rented a cozy home a block from downtown and about 3 blocks from the beach.  A pretty low key getaway – each day we spent at the beach, went to antique stores, and shopped at the local farmer’s market.   Each night we cooked at home dining a fresco on the over-sized deck, and went out to the bars for cocktails.

We took a day trip to Journeyman Distillery which I would definitely recommend if spending any time in the area – a gorgeous rustic space with a bar, light bites and distillery tours (sign up in advance).  The space also is available for weddings and private events.

No getaway is complete without a swag bag – complete with roadie supplies (a Todd family staple), custom pickle t-shirts, fake Ray Bans (also a Todd family staple), and other goodies.  The Bloody Mary and Pickle Bar complete with beef jerky straws was a fan favorite.  Custom “Dyl Pickle” logo by Olive & Violet.

Vintage Travel Baby’s First Birthday

By his first birthday, Francis had already visited both coasts, as well as 3 international countries. It was only fitting that his first birthday celebration was inspired by vintage travel. Proud parents Soledad and Ben hosted Sunday brunch for close friends at Perennial Virant with a seasonal farm-to-table menu from Chef Paul Virant. Guests enjoyed cake by Toni Patisserie, who was inspired by the invitation designed by Olive & Violet. Decor and paper goods by Olive & Violet. Select photos from V+Z .

You can see Francis’s baby shower invitation here (how the time flies!), currently for sale on Minted.com

Backyard BBQ Graduation Celebration

To celebrate Maggie’s graduation, her family hosted an intimate BBQ in their backyard. Classic red and white checkered linen table cloths and coordinating napkins set the backdrop, while vintage blue mason jars holding fresh cut peonies donned the center of the dinner table. Guests each brought side dishes with mains catered by Smoque BBQ. The compact bar was setup in a wooden drink crate – Moscow Mule”s (a family favorite) and White Sangria with Summer Fruits (Williams-Sonoma), along with Midwestern craft beers, were the beverages of choice for the evening. The al fresco feast was beautiful and delicious – a huge congratulations to Maggie on her graduation!

Bow Tie Baby Shower

Fairly convinced she was having a boy, Jenny’s Pinterest board was donned with baby bow tie onesies for her soon expected arrival. Although they were waiting to find out the sex of the baby, many people, including Jenny’s mother, were confident a little baby boy was in their future. For her shower, Jenny’s friends donned bows or bow ties, to say whether they thought she was having a girl or a boy. Everyone enjoyed sips and nibbles, and a make-shift photo booth on a beautiful April afternoon at the home of a friend of Jenny’s.

Almost exactly one month later, Jenny gave birth to a beautiful, bouncing, baby….GIRL! Welcome to the world Charlotte Laurel!

Let’s Get Down and Derby

What could be more befitting than to celebrate a 30th birthday with a classic Kentucky Derby themed affair? Complete with a Bourbon Bar with drink accessories from Olive & Violet: Beer Bow ties – recently featured on Parade.com – as well as custom drink stirrers for the signature Derby inspired cocktails. Vintage trophies held romantic arrangements from A New Leaf, while custom cigar bands added to the festivities. A visit from the 5411 Empanadas food truck was a welcome treat. The H Allen Band closed out the night under the night sky and vintage string lights strung on the deck. A great time was had by all!
